To screen record on Android with a teleprompter, you need a recording app that puts a scrolling script overlay on top of the screen while it captures, because Android’s built-in screen recorder has no teleprompter and no face cam. DemoScope (HD Face Cam Screen Recorder on the App Store and Google Play) does both in one take: start a recording, open the Teleprompter tool, paste your script, and read while you tap.

Short answer: Use DemoScope’s Teleprompter tool on Android. Open DemoScope, pick your recording source, paste your script into the Teleprompter, set the auto-scroll speed, and hit record. The script scrolls over your screen while DemoScope captures the screen, your mic and your front camera as a picture-in-picture face cam bubble.

What you need before you start

DemoScope runs on Android 16+ and on iOS 15+ (iPhone and iPad). The free tier records and streams with a watermark and stops each take at 10 minutes. Pro is $19.99 as a one-time purchase, which removes the watermark and the time cap. No subscription, no trial.

Steps: screen record on Android with a teleprompter inside DemoScope

This is the mode to use when your demo lives inside a website, a photo, or something you can show from within DemoScope, and you want the script invisible in the final video.

  1. Install DemoScope from Google Play and open it.
  2. Pick your recording source and set up the face cam bubble: choose circle, square, vertical or horizontal rectangle, drag it to a corner, pinch to resize.
  3. Open the Teleprompter tool and paste your script. Any text works, typed or pasted from your notes.
  4. Set the auto-scroll speed. Slower than you think feels right, see the troubleshooting note below.
  5. Turn on touch indicators if you are demoing taps, and set the indicator color so it shows against your UI.
  6. Tap record, let the script scroll, and talk through the demo.
  7. Stop, and the MP4 saves to your camera roll.

In this in-app mode the teleprompter is visible only to you. It is not recorded, so viewers see a clean screen while you read.

Can the teleprompter run over a different app on Android?

Yes, and this is where Android has a real advantage. DemoScope’s Other App mode sends DemoScope to the background, drops a floating face cam bubble on your screen, and records whatever you do across other apps. On Android, the teleprompter comes with you.

  1. In DemoScope, choose Other App as the recording source.
  2. Paste your script into the Teleprompter before you start.
  3. Start the recording and grant Android’s screen capture permission.
  4. Navigate to the app you want to demo. DemoScope’s floating control panel stays on screen with record, pause and mic mute, and you can hide it down to a small bubble.
  5. Read from the scrolling script while you drive the other app. Drawing on screen, text on screen and the laser pointer also work here.
  6. Stop from the floating panel.

Two honest limits. First, over other apps on Android the teleprompter is part of the recording, so your script will appear in the video. If you need an invisible script, record in-app instead, or use Other App mode for silent B-roll and keep the talking segments in-app. Second, DemoScope cannot draw its own touch dots over other apps because Android does not allow it; DemoScope points you to Android’s own “Show taps” developer setting, and those dots do get recorded.

The free route and why it falls short

Android’s built-in screen recorder is free, already installed, and perfectly fine for capturing a bug. It has no teleprompter, no face cam overlay, and no touch indicators. The usual workaround is to open a separate teleprompter app on the same phone, which does not work, because the moment you switch apps the teleprompter is what gets recorded or the recorder loses focus. The other workaround is propping a tablet next to you with the script, which means your eyes drift off-screen in every take.

On iPhone the built-in recorder has the same gaps, which I broke down in iphone built-in screen recorder vs third-party apps and in the broader iOS screen recorder guide: built-in tool vs dedicated apps.

My recommendation: if you record demos more than once a month, pay the $19.99 once and stop fighting your setup. The trade-off is real, DemoScope does no editing, no captions and no cloud hosting, so you still need something else to trim a clip or publish it.

Troubleshooting the things that actually go wrong

Your scroll speed is too fast. Set it slower than feels natural. You will pause to tap through the app, and the script keeps moving while you do.

Your mic sounds hollow. DemoScope records mic plus device audio. Wired earbuds with a mic beat the built-in mic in a room with any echo.

You run out of storage mid-take. Device-native resolution plus a face cam eats space fast. Clear a few gigs before a long demo rather than re-recording.

You need six takes. Break the script into short sections and record them as separate takes. DemoScope cannot trim or stitch, so a short clean take beats a long one with a mistake at minute eight.

If you also record on an iPhone, the feature split is worth knowing: see is DemoScope different on Android than on iPhone? and record iPhone screen with camera: built-in vs DemoScope.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the teleprompter show up in my recording?

In DemoScope’s in-app recording mode the teleprompter is visible only to you and is not recorded. In Other App mode on Android the teleprompter is part of the recording, so plan for the script to be visible in that footage.

Can I use a teleprompter while screen recording another app on Android?

Yes. DemoScope’s Other App mode keeps the teleprompter, drawing, text on screen and a laser pointer working over other apps on Android, along with a floating face cam and a control panel for record, pause and mic mute.

Is there a free way to screen record on Android with a teleprompter?

DemoScope’s free tier includes the teleprompter, the face cam and Other App recording, with a watermark and a 10 minute cap per take. Android’s built-in recorder is free but has no teleprompter and no face cam at all.

Does the teleprompter work on iPhone too?

Yes, in DemoScope’s in-app recording mode on iPhone and iPad. It does not work in Other App mode on iPhone, because iOS limits that mode to Camera, PiP Border and text on screen. That restriction is iOS-specific, not an Android one.

Can DemoScope add captions or trim the recording afterward?

No. DemoScope has no transcription, captions or video editing. Recordings export as MP4 to your camera roll, and you would trim or caption them in a separate editor.
